The following Security Council press statement on Iraq was read out today by Council President Nawaf Salam (Lebanon):
Members of the Security Council commended the Independent High Electoral Commission’s (IHEC) completion of the manual recount of all ballots cast in the Baghdad governorate and announcement of its results,
Looked forward to the ratification of the election results by the Federal Supreme Court,
Called upon Iraq’s leaders to form in an inclusive political process, and as quickly as possible, a government that represents the will of the Iraqi people and their hope for a brighter future in a strong, independent, unified and democratic Iraq, and
Condemned all acts of violence and terrorism in Iraq.
